“Tech gives the quietest student a voice.” – Jerry Blumengarten

Education is nothing but a communication process between instructor and learner in which instructors give instructions, share their experiences, share ideas, suggest the right things, and so on. Learning takes place when both instructor (teacher) and learner (student) are able to communicate effectively.

Student engagement is concerned with the interaction between the time, effort, and other relevant resources invested by both  students and their institutions intended to optimise the student experience and enhance the learning outcomes and development of students and the performance, and reputation of the institution (Trowler, V. (2010)).

Online learning has made this communication process easier for both teachers and students and facilitated better student engagement. Though online learning has already been imparted during the pandemic situation, it was just to deal with the emergency needs and without appropriate readiness (Deka, P.K. (2021). A proper learning management system is required for the readiness of educational institutes as well as for students that ensure a better learning environment.

The online learning approach provides an appropriate platform to encourage student engagement and teachers have a lot of responsibility as facilitators to direct the next generation. Online learning management systems made this possible where students can focus more while remote learning. Activities like online discussions, information sharing, messaging, chats, polls, quizzes, and other interactive channels keep students engaged (Burgstahler, 2000). This enhances students’ collaborating learning skills and environment.

Now students can learn beyond their textbooks as they are given a chance to explore additional information by providing links, hyperlinks, and tutorial videos related to a topic for better understanding.

Through virtual classrooms, students can interact more, share their thoughts more freely that makes them feel confident and comfortable. It’s a win-win situation for both teachers and students as it allows students to explore more by themselves, which leads teachers to carry qualitative discussions among students that help students in their overall development.

For effective learning, student engagement is the foremost thing that cannot be overlooked, and learning management systems are the need of the hour. Improved student engagement gives equal chances to every student present in the class and provides many self-learning opportunities and facilitates teamwork.

It would be right to state that the learning management system has not only changed the traditional way of education but also helps in improved student engagement.
